When might clients turn to us for help?

Yes, it is possible to manage the probate process on one’s own. This may be a good option if the estate is straightforward and of low value.

However, even with smaller estates, executors often find our experience and professional support during this challenging period, tremendously valuable. With executors being personally liable for mistakes and mishaps, having a professional on hand significantly reduces the risk they bear.

ICAEW’s Role in Probate Services

For close to a decade, the ICAEW has been the approved regulator of accountancy firms that offer non-contentious probate services. Nevertheless, many people are still unaware that they can turn to probate-accredited accountants to apply for the grant of probate and to handle the estate administration.

Why Choose Goldwins Probate?

When it comes to managing the complexities of probate, a solicitor often comes to mind — especially if they prepared or are holding the will. However, other professional options may be better suited to meet these needs.

Accountants, especially those with probate accreditation, can offer exceptional support. As trusted advisers with a blend of both accounting and probate expertise and experience, we at Goldwins Probate, provide an empathetic, smooth, and cost-effective probate service, fully integrating the accounting, tax, and legal aspects of probate and estate administration.

Working with an accountant who already knows them is a source of comfort to many families during this difficult period.

An accountant who has managed a loved one's finances in the past will have a thorough understanding of their financial situation. With years of experience and an established relationship, they'll have access to valuable historical information and a deeper insight into financial decisions and family dynamics.

At Goldwins, we build long-term relationships with clients and their families over many years.

Accountants are well-versed in financial matters and tax planning, making them ideal for probate work. They know what financial details to address and how to obtain necessary information. Probate solicitors will often turn to accountants for tasks like inheritance tax calculations or share valuations.

Using Goldwins Probate will help ensure full compliance with tax and legal requirements and that each beneficiary receives their rightful share. The Executor(s) will receive expert advice on how to distribute assets in a tax-efficient manner and gain financial guidance during this difficult time.

In addition to assisting with the accounting and tax aspects of probate, we also help with practical tasks like identifying, selling, and distributing assets, and settling any outstanding debts.

By appointing a probate accountant from the outset, you can streamline the process, saving time and avoiding unnecessary duplication of effort.

We provide a cost-effective solution for complex estates, offering professional expertise, transparent pricing, and, in many cases,  fixed-fee packages. These fees are normally deductible from the Estate.  This is in contrast to lay Executors dealing with the complexities of probate, bearing the risk with no reward, unless as otherwise provided for in the Will.

Using Goldwins Probate reduces the Executor’s personal exposure to claims against the Estate and provides the beneficiaries with a reliable and comprehensive service.

Additionally, because accountants offer a broad range of services, we can provide further support to help families plan for the future, ensuring financial stability for the next generation.

We often hear from beneficiaries where lay executors are acting and things are just taking forever — unsurprising given that they have their own day-to-day work and life to deal with and that they have little incentive (outside of chasing beneficiaries and creditors!) to get the job across the line.

When Can’t an ICAEW-Accredited Accountant Help?

We, as ICAEW-regulated probate practitioners, are not permitted to handle contentious probate cases. Should a dispute arise, a solicitor will have to step in, and once resolved, the case will be handed back to the probate practitioner and the probate process will resume.
